A hacker who exploited a flaw in the Multichain DeFi protocol returned $1 million to his victims, keeping the remaining $200,000 as a “reward.”
On January 18, Multichain warned its users that their cryptoassets were at risk due to a flaw in the DeFi cross-chain protocol. This was later exploited by a large number of hackers, who are believed to have stolen over $3 million worth of cryptoassets from Multichain users so far.
One such hacker managed to steal $1.2 million from numerous victims. On the morning of January 19, an individual broadcast a message on the Ethereum blockchain:
One victim – who lost $973,000 in crypto assets to hackers – responded with a message embedded in an Ethereum transaction:
Nine hours later, in the early hours of January 20, the hacker returned this victim $816,000 in cryptoassets (259 ETH – represents the stolen 309 ETH minus the 50 ETH “tip”).
The victim replied:
Multichain itself also sent a message to the hacker:
The hacker then replied:
and then on the morning of January 20:
The hacker returned 63 ETH to Multichain later that day.
